First things first, Happy New Year from everyone at Custom Curtains! We hope you had a wonderful time, and that your January Blues aren’t too difficult to cope with after such a fun-filled. relaxing and indulgent break. For us, the Christmas period was a very busy one, and a great end to a great year. We can’t wait to see what 2015 holds!

To mark the start of the new year, we’ve decided to share some very useful advice with the Custom Curtains readers: five of the most important things to remember when choosing your window dressings…

Size

When it comes to purchasing new curtains, size matters. Who wants a too-small set of curtains in their bedroom, allowing light to stream in and running the risk of nosy neighbours getting an eyeful? At the same time, oversized curtains drown the window and can often make the space seem smaller.

Whether short and silly or big and bunchy, ill-fitting curtains will do nothing for your room in terms of fashion or function. We recommend referring to our measurement guide, which explains all you need to know about measuring up and discovering the correct size of curtain you require.

Price

Of course, cost is always a big factor when decorating your home. Setting yourself a strict budget will ensure that you don’t go overboard when choosing new curtains, meaning that you’ll be left short when looking for additional furnishings.

Be clear about how much you want to spend, and spend time looking for the very best deals. Here at Custom Curtains, we’re pleased to say that we have a huge range of curtains at brilliant prices, from the most homely, affordable pairs to truly luxurious designs.

Light control

It may sound obvious, but the primary function of curtains is to control the amount of light allowed into a room. If you require a pitch black room at night, consider those of a darker, heavier material. Alternatively, if you want to maximise on sunlight, choose finer, sheer fabrics in light colours to allow as much light as possible to flood in, even when they’re drawn.

As well as light control, you should think about the amount of air you want to circulate, and the privacy that you require. A rule of thumb is the lighter the fabric, the more exposure you’ll get. With that being said, if you’re wanting total darkness, little air circulation and maximum privacy, plump for thicker fabric and blackout lining!

Design

We can’t be forgetting about the importance of aesthetics! When choosing new curtains, think about what will look right in the room setting. If the room has a strong theme, try to stick to it – lucky for you, we have a huge selection of colours and patterns to ensure that you’ll find the perfect pair to match the rest of the space.

If your room is yet to adopt a theme, why not build the rest of the space around the curtains? While they’re primarily functional furnishings, there’s no reason why they can’t be a stylish statement too!
