Get the look: The ’60s

Wed 26 Aug 2015 James Nuttall

With the anniversary of the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival last week, we at Custom Curtains were inspired by the incredibly psychedelic fashion of that decade to write an article on how you could incorporate this style into your home to get that iconic ’60s look.

Naturally, your first port of call is to invest on some new curtains! Fortunately, Custom Curtains has tons of far-out patterns for you to choose from. Still, once you’ve dealt with this necessity, there’s still quite a bit of work to be done before you can call your home strictly bohemian…

If you are going for the 60’s feel, then you’d better be ready for a helluva lotta tie-dye invading your decor! Psychedelia was the very essence of this decade, and that means you will need some avant-garde artwork in the mix. Bold and brash is your key to the summer of love; you will need some hip blues, reds, greens… every colour you can think of to get a really ‘happening’ home. Nothing, repeat nothing, is ‘too much’.

No 1960’s-inspired interior could be complete without one of these beautiful works of art. These glass lamps were originally designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and have been a staple of elegance, taste, and above all, extravagance, for over 100 years. They come available in every colour and pattern conceivable; from blues to pinks, from simple styles to detailed and artistic images. Any bohemian with the money – from golden age Hollywood stars to long-haired 60’s rockers – just had to have one of these beauties.

Fortunately, plenty of other designers and companies have started making lamps in this style, without the hefty price tag, so it is easy to acquire one at a reasonable price.  It might help to have some chiffon scarves to throw over them in the evening for a really groovy atmosphere, too.

What swinging 60’s home would be complete without one of these? How else are you going to spin your copies of Disraeli Gears, Electric Ladyland and Rubber Soul?

How could we possibly finish with any other object than the lava lamp? Is there any other single object that symbolises the 60’s better than this groovy and out-of-this-world lighting element? Here is another lamp that is available in an abundance of different colours and styles; from spaceships, to pyramids, to fish bowls, to human heads. Far out, man!
