There’s something about Pink

We at Custom Curtains love our pink collection. Pink is the archetypal colour for expressing your feminine side, and seems to have been since time began.

It is stated in the Oxford English Dictionary that the colour ‘Pink’ was first defined in the late 17th century, initially used to describe flowers this colour. Therefore, it literally has been associated with feminine and delicate artifacts from the day the word ‘pink’ was coined.

However, there are plenty of nonconformists out there who will argue that pink is, in fact, a lot more masculine than the mainstream gives it credit for. Did you know, for example, that an American article from 1918 completely reversed the ‘gender colours’ of blue for boys and pink for girls: ‘The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.’

So, what is it about the colour pink being associated with femininity? Why do most people look at fuchsia, magenta, puce, salmon, and all the rest, and naturally assume tenderness, love and sensitivity?

Is is just because we were brought up to instinctively associate pink with girls, candy and flowers, or would we feel the same without any conditioning?

As we consider ourselves on the ‘cutting edge’ of fashion and interior design, we have compiled a list of images below that we believe show pink taking a more powerful stance. Although these fabrics are perfect for expressing your feminine side, there is no need to feel as though you will be judged for being weak; in fact, throw a little black into the mix and you will have a very seductive motif going on.

Our website houses a fabulous array of pink fabrics to suit any style, feminine or not. Why not head over and take a look?
